A Brandenburg Christmas <\/em>(ABC 476 4687) is the The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and Choir’s\u00a02010\u00a0live recording of their\u00a0annual\u00a0festive concert <\/span>Noel! Noel!, <\/em>which enters its 14th season in 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the\u00a0leadership of Artistic Director Paul Dyer, the orchestra is known for\u00a0its inimitable presentation of both popular and rare Baroque music performed on period instruments. This core is supplemented by a mix of\u00a0repertoire which suits the resources and style of the ensemble.<\/p>\n

A Brandenburg Christmas<\/em> is the second of its Christmas recordings (the last one was n 1999) and the latest in its collection of 16 releases. The\u00a0\u00a0mood is set with the opening tracks by Palestrina (Hodie Christus Natus Est<\/em>) and Hildegard von Bingen’s hypnotic\u00a0plainchant\u00a0for female voices (O Ecclesia<\/em>). Moving through Purcell’s Rejoice in the Lord Alway <\/em>and Mozart’s Laudate Dominum,\u00a0<\/em>it lands firmly in the 20th century with Herbert Howells’ Here is the Little Door<\/em> and Billy Joel’s Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel). <\/em><\/p>\n

Interspersed are Latin inspired songs by Merula and Ara\u00f1es\u00a0and traditional\u00a0ones like The Coventry Carol<\/em> and The Little Drummer Boy, <\/em>creatively arranged by\u00a0Tristan Coelho, and a new work Alma Redemptoris Mater <\/em>by Hugh Ronzani. Both composers are Sydney graduates who have furthered their studies in composition at the Royal College of Music in London.<\/p>\n

In a concession to the power of perennial favourites, the two final items on the CD are Gruber’s Tyrolean classic Stille Nacht (Silent Night),<\/em>\u00a0 and the traditional O Come, All ye Faithful<\/em>, arranged by Sir David Willcocks.<\/p>\n

The soloists, who\u00a0include sopranos\u00a0Belinda Montgomery and Louise Prickett deserve special mention for their singularly beautiful performances. The addition of the classical saxophone, played by Christina Leonard and sounding simultaneously contemporary but classical,\u00a0is a clever touch.<\/p>\n

A Brandenburg Christmas<\/em> is not just about\u00a0music. The Brandenburgs have\u00a0created an\u00a0experience,\u00a0inspiring traditions that go\u00a0beyond listening\u00a0with\u00a0their inclusion of\u00a0special Christmas\u00a0recipes in the\u00a0printed insert. Lyndey Milan, Maggie Beer, Damien Pignolet and Eileen Dyer (Paul’s Mum) have contributed recipes.\u00a0It is not the first time music, food and love have been aligned.<\/p>\n

The music is\u00a0affirming, soothing and glorifying and proves that Christmas can be acknowledged in both sacred and secular styles.<\/p>\n
