Composer and saxophonist Phillip Johnston, performs with his new seven-piece ensemble the Phillip Johnston 7tet to present an afternoon of original swinging jazz, blues and Latin music.

Johnston is an American jazz musician and composer who divides his time between Sydney and New York. He has composed theatre music for Bell Shakespeare Company and film music for award-winning directors, Paul Mazursky (Faithful), Henry Bean (Noise) and Philip Haas (The Music of Chance).

In his Riverside Theatres performance, Johnston will perform with top-shelf Australian jazz musicians. Drawing on Johnston’s work with The Microscopic Septet, Big Trouble and his original arrangements of classic jazz of the 20s and 30s, this seven-piece ensemble features four saxophones, creating a distinctive sounds in the contemporary jazz scene.

Johnston’s silent film scores have been performed across Europe, as well as numerous film festivals including New York, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. His collaboration with graphic artist Art Spiegelman, Wordless, premiered at the Sydney Opera House in 2013 before commencing a nine-city tour in the United States.
