L’elisir d’amore On The Screen
Direct from its acclaimed London season, Australian cinemas will screen the Royal Opera’s joyous production of Donizetti’s sun-drenched L’elisir d’amore this February, captured live in high-definition from a live performance during its third season on the Covent Garden stage.
Set in the rustic countryside of Southern Italy, Laurent Pelly’s production features an all-star cast including celebrated Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel as Dr Dulcamara, British soprano Lucy Crowe as Adina the most sophisticated lady in the village and Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo in the role of the love-struck Nemorino.
The cinema screenings offer Sydney audiences a great opportunity to witness the incredible talent of Mr. Terfel, who will be visiting Australia this March to perform with the Perth Symphony in March and in Melbourne in Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust, in the role of Méphistophélès.
L’elisir d’amore is a romantic comedy which follows the story of Nemorino who turns to a love potion supplied from Dr Dulcamara’s travelling truck of quacks to seduce Adina, who he loves from afar. Nemorino’s amorous intentions are rudely interrupted by another suitor, Sergeant Belcore, until Adina realizes where her heart truly lies.
Conducted by Daniele Rustioni, an alumnus of the Jette Parker Young Artists programme, the production exudes a Mediterranean charm and giant haystacks, Vespas and even a stray dog complete the visual humour.
