Melbourne To Host BBC Proms Australia in 2016
Sydneysiders might be tempted to plan a visit to Melbourne next year with the BBC announcing that it will bring a version of the BBC Proms festival to Melbourne from April 13- 16 in 2016.
The Melbourne Proms will be held at Hamer Hall over 4 days and will feature two of Australia’s main orchestras – the Queensland Symphony and Melbourne Symphony. British conductor Sir Andrew Davis, Chief Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra who has conducted more Last Nights of the BBC Proms than any other living conductor, will lead the event.
The programme features music by composers from Australia and around the world, extending from the Romantic era to modern times including the Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz, Nigel Westlake’s Dream of Flying and Alberto Ginastera’s Piano Concerto No. 1.
In keeping with the philosophy of making classical music accessible to as many as possible, “Prommer tickets” will be available for every concert at $20 each.
The annual BBC Proms held in London each year from July to September is reputedly the largest classical music festival in the world. Concerts are held in several venues and attract performers and audiences from all over the world.
