Music that heals three ways – the ADO performs

Indulging a passion for making music is just one aspect of the 160 strong Australian Doctors’ Orchestra which performs in Sydney this month in the presence of Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO Governor of NSW.

This annual event is an opportunity for camaraderie, entertainment, and most importantly, raises funds for the ADO’s selected charities. It is possibly not too daring to suggest that the medicos themselves find the exercise enormously therapeutic!  

Each year the players, who are all classically trained musicians, rehearse independently and gather over a weekend in one of the Australian capital cities to perform. This year it is the turn of Sydney to host the concerts – an opportunity that arises just every 4- 5 years.  

Vienna based conductor Warwick Stengards takes the baton with pianist Benjamin Martin at the keyboard. Stengards has worked at the Volksoper Wien and since 2004 has been Erster Kapellmeister at the Luzerner Theater and Chefdirigent of the Schlossorchester Schönbrunn, Vienna.

 Martin is a graduate of the Juillard School and performs with the Firebird Trio.

 Together with the orchestra they will perform Walton’s Crown Imperial,  Brahms’ Piano Concerto 1 and Elgar’s Enigma Variations.  The ABC’s Simon Marnie will be your host for the afternoon.

The ADO has selected two charities – “Youth Off the Streets” and “Children’s Hospital Institute of Sports Medicine” to benefit from the proceeds of the concert.
