Musica viva launches ken tribe fund for australian composers
Last week, Musica Viva presented the Goldner Trio in concert with pianist Ian Munro.
The concert celebrated the success of the Goldner’s appearances at the City of London Music Festival (see our post on their tour and reviews). The concert also marked the launch of a chamber music initiative as Music Viva announced the creation of the Ken Tribe Fund for Australian Composers.
Ken Tribe died in July 2010 at the age of 96. During his life he made a significant impact in shaping most of Australia’s large and small music ensembles and supported the activities of many of our composers including Peter Sculthorpe, Ross Edwards, Carl Vine, Nigel Westlake and the late Richard Meale. Through his life he was, at various times, Chair, Artistic Director, President and then Patron of Musica Viva.
The Ken Tribe Fund for Australian Composerswill continue Ken Tribe’s commitment to this cause. In paying tribute to Ken Tribe, Musica Viva Artistic Director Carl Vine said:
“Ken considered that one of the great deficiencies in our country was the lack of quality
chamber music by Australian composers. Quite recently, Ken’s family came to us to realise a
plan he hatched before his passing.
Tonight I am honoured and humbled to announce the establishment of a perpetual monument
to Ken’s generosity and vision: the Ken Tribe Fund for Australian Composers.
We owe Ken’s family very special thanks for making this possible: for helping to ensure that
Australia‘s finest composers will be able to add to our national reservoir of chamber music for
years to come.
This gift will be the starting point for a continuing body of commission funds to grow and
flourish over time with support from similarly enlightened individuals. To this end we extend
our gratitude to Kim Williams AM, whose commission for Musica Viva’s 2014 season will be
the first realisation of the Ken Tribe Fund for Australian Composers.”
