Musicus Medicus presents “The Art of Music.”

The NSW Doctors Orchestra, now in its 16 th year of performing, is conducted by Dr David Banney. It comprises about 80 talented medical students and doctors from metropolitan Sydney and regional NSW.

This annual fundraising concert promises to be an inspiring afternoon of beautiful music, featuring Kathryn Selby playing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor. The program also includes the popular Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky / Ravel, as well as another short work, a new composition by artistic director David Banney.

All concert proceeds will benefit charities in both the arts and health. This includes funding the annual NSW Drs Orchestra Sydney Eisteddfod Instrumental Scholarship. This is awarded to an outstanding instrumentalist (16-25 years) in the fields of strings (bowed and plucked), woodwind or brass instruments. Sydney Eisteddfod is an independent, community-based, not-for-profit organisation and a charity which for well over 80 years has been nurturing performing arts and contributing significantly to the evolving culture in Australia.

The medical charity chosen to be supported this year is the Pain Management Research Institute (PMRI) which is a joint initiative between The University of Sydney and Royal North Shore Hospital. One in five Australians live with chronic pain, often caught in a cycle of depression, pills and inactivity.  PMRI seeks to improve the assessment of and treatments for chronic pain, through basic research, clinical research and professional education.
