Starting Young

The ABRSM in the UK (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) has announced a major teaching initiative aimed at introducing primary school children in England to classical music.

The ABRSM’s ‘Classical 100’ is an online resource supported by Decca and UK’s Classic FM, based on a list of 100 works that it believes are ideal for getting  children aged five to 11 interested in music and then inspiring them to investigate further.

The chosen works span nearly ten centuries of music, from Hildegard of Bingen (born 1098) to contemporary composers like Elena Kats-Chernin, John Adams and Steve Reich. The list includes Ravel’s Bolèro, Sousa’s Liberty Bell, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Allegri’s Miserere – which so captivated the young Mozart.
