First there was the short story by n Annie Proulx. Then there was the Ang Lee directed movie starring the late Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Now there is the opera, Charles Wuorinen’s Brokeback Mountain, which premiered last month in at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
As reported in The Guardian, Wuorinen says that he wanted to do something that the film didn’t: instead of the beautifying effects of the cinematography on the mountainous landscape of the North American West, the opera returns to the sense of threat, of danger, of hard-fought existence that the Wyoming mountains are really about.
Proulx herself adapted her story for the libretto and the opera featured Tom Randle as Jack with Daniel Okulitch as Ennis.
MediciTV is offering a stream of the premiere performance of Brokeback Mountain, available online for the next 90 days.
