Omega Ensemble: Beethoven’s Seventh

The Omega Ensemble under Artistic Director David Rowden, moves from the petite to the grand and then the mighty  in its July concerts with the music Gounod, Spohr and Beethoven.

Beethoven’s Symphony No 7 in A major opus 92, is masterpiece of the repertoire. The Omega ensemble will perform the arrangement by Pierluigi Destro (b 1959) the Italian oboeist who, in 1998, reconstructed the score for 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns, 2 bassoons and double bassoon.

First performed at a benefit concert for wounded soldiers, the symphony achieved instant and lasting popularity. It is driven by an intoxicating energy in what Wagner described as the “apotheosis of dance.” The symphony follows works by Gounod and Spohr who are better known for their operatic creations, but who also made outstanding contributions to the instrumental canon. Gounod’s Petite Symphonie is charming, while the sparkling Grand Nonetto flaunts Spohr’s melodic brilliance.
