Omega Ensemble Plays A Double Feast

Capture

The Omega Ensemble presents a double feast of quartets and quintets of grand masterpieces, watershed moments and world premieres with Artistic Director David Rowden, violinists Natsuko Yoshimoto and Ike See, violist Neil Thompson and cellist Paul Stender.

This programme of two quartets and two quintets features The Lark string quartet by Haydn, is a perfect representative of the entire 83 string quartets that he wrote. Like the majority of string quartets throughout the history of the form, its four movements provide a superior entertainment in four acts, aptly described as ‘a story, a song, a dance and a party.’

When Debussy composed his String Quartet in G minor in 1893, it led the charge in freeing music from its Classical boundaries and looked ahead to the future. Pierre Boulez said that Debussy freed chamber music from ‘rigid structure, frozen rhetoric and rigid aesthetics.’ Also featured in this concert is Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A major recorded on Omega’s debut ABC Classics CD. In addition, Omega will give the premiere of Ben Hoadley’s Clarinet Quintet.

The program: Debussy String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10/ Ben Hoadley Clarinet Quintet (World Premiere)/ Haydn String Quartet Op. 64, No. 5 ‘The Lark’/ Mozart Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581
