orchestra seventeen88 – Second Winter Festival
orchestra seventeen88 presents its second annual Winter Festival, under the artistic direction of violinist Rachael Beesley.
The inaugural festival in 2014 featured a chamber music recital and orchestral concert, creating a superb afternoon for lovers of the classical music repertoire. This year, the intimacy and acoustics of the chapels at both venues enhances the sound of the historical instruments and allows the audience to experience live the beauty and joy of the music from the 18th and early 19th centuries.
This year’s Festival will be performed twice, across Sydney, allowing a choice of venues and dates.
Opening the programme, the Chamber Soloists will perform Mendelssohn’s Sinfonia No.6 in E flat major for two violins, viola, violoncello and double bass. This will be followed by Anton Reicha’s spectacular Octet in E flat major op.96, composed in 1807 for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, two violins, viola, violoncello and double bass.
Following afternoon tea, the full orchestra performs Mozart and Haydn Symphonies together with Mozart’s Oboe Concerto. Featuring Vienna based Australian historical oboe player, Emma Black.
The Winter Festivals highlight orchestra seventeen88’s aim of inspiring audiences by offering outstanding works by lesser-known composers alongside the old favourites. This year’s Festival promises to be a fascinating insight into the thriving Dutch music-making metropolis of the 18th century.
