Orchestra’s Youth Education Programme Expands in 2020
The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra’s Young Mannheim Symphonists youth orchestra training program will expand in 2020.
In 2020, students can audition for the National Winter Academy – a week-long residential music camp in Sydney in July – and/or to attend one of the three state-based Young Mannheim Symphonists Intensives – five-day programs in Victoria, Queensland and NSW, during the Easter holidays.
ARCO’s education programmes give outstanding young music students the opportunity to discover the magic of approaching music with appropriate performance style. They will be led through musical masterpieces and exposed to the knowledge and perceptions of experienced professional HIP (historically informed performance) specialist musicians of the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra inspiring them to bring the music to life and empowering them to begin making informed musical decisions on their own.
Young Mannheim Symphonists was established in 2014 by the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra’s founding artistic director, the late Richard Gill AO and is now directed by the orchestra’s co-artistic directors Rachael Beesley and Nicole van Bruggen with special guest conductors. The programme has become an integral part of Australia’s music education landscape.
National Winter Academy | 6-11 July 2020
The Young Mannheim Symphonists 2020 National Winter Academy is a residential camp in Sydney. The orchestra will be conducted this year by the inspiring Austrian conductor and innovator Mario Dobernig.
State Intensives | April 2020
The Young Mannheim Symphonists 2020 State Intensives in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales take place in the Easter holidays and will be directed by Rachael Beesley and Nicole van Bruggen. Students from Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern and Australian Capital Territories are welcome to audition for a State Intensive of their choice.
Students are welcome to apply for both the National Winter Academy and a State Intensive.
In 2020, Young Mannheim Symphonists will delve into masterpieces by the Viennese masters – Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss. The students will be mentored by tutors who will rehearse and perform alongside them in the orchestra. These tutors are principal musicians of the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra – professional musicians who specialise in HIP on period instruments. Their knowledge of musical styles, articulation and embellishments comes from years of performing experience, reading treatises and studying scores, experimenting with instruments and interpretations and sharing with peers and students. They are passionate about understanding our musical heritage in the context in which it was created, and they are even more passionate about inspiring and enlightening others.

WHO
Young Mannheim Symphonists is open to young musicians who play an orchestral instrument to a level of at least Grade 6 AMEB (or equivalent). No experience on period instruments is necessary. String players are encouraged to experiment with playing on gut strings and transitional/classical bows however it is possible to participate in this course on a modern instrument with a modern bow.
Age Recommendation: 15-21 years (younger students are welcome to apply)
Recommended Level: Flute, Clarinet and Oboe: minimum Grade 8
Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone and Timpani: minimum Grade 6
Strings: minimum Grade 7
HOW
To apply for the National Winter Academy or a State Intensive, submit an online YMS Application Form together with a Video Audition before midnight on Sunday 16 February 2020. More information can be found at www.arco.org.au/yms2020
Audition Requirements:
A work by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or one of their contemporaries (Classical or Romantic) – to be performed unaccompanied (duration: maximum 2-3 mins)

Notification of places for the 2020 Young Mannheim Symphonists will be on 28 February 2020

Cost per participant for a State Intensive: $400/ Cost per participant for the National Winter School: $750/ Travel & Accommodation and Fee Bursaries are available upon request
