thesnowmaiden

A rare opportunity to see Rimsky-Korsakov’s marvellous lyric opera, The Snow Maiden in a new production from the Paris Opera, captured live from the Opéra Bastille, on 25 Apr 2017.

The original 1882 version of this opera has bee recreated by two Russian artists: acclaimed director Dmitri Tcherniakov and conductor Mikhail Tatarnikov.

Based on a Slavic legend, this magical fantasy follows Snegurochka, sung by young soprano sensation Aida Garifullina, the fruit of the union between Spring the Beauty and Grandfather Frost, born in times of old in Tsar Berendey’s mythical kingdom. She bears a tragic secret, her heart is made of ice, and if warmed by human love, it will melt.

Mikhail Tatarnikov conducts the Orchestre de l’Opera national de Paris; Direction and set design by Dmitri Tcherniakov. Sung in Russian with English surtitles.
