Pinchgut Opera’s innovative film debut, A Delicate Fire, featuring the music of the amazing Barbara Strozzi is now available to watch online.
Barbara Strozzi was a 17th century Italian singer, a prolific composer and lutenist of the baroque period. Born in Venice c August 1619, she was successful in her own right without church or court patronage, while raising three children and conspicuously avoiding a male nome de plume.
A Delicate Fire is the co-creation of Pinchgut Opera’s musical director, conductor and keyboard player Erin Helyard, director Constantine Costi, production designer Charlotte Mungomery and choreographer Shannon Burns.
The cast includes the cream of Australia’s operatic talent and features mezzo-sopranos Anna Dowsley and Keara Donohoe, sopranos Taryn Fiebig and Chloe Lankshear, tenor Nicholas Jones, baritone David Greco and bass Andrew O’Connor. They are accompanied by a period instrumental ensemble comprising violinists Matthew Greco and Karina Schmitz, Hannah Lane playing baroque harp, Anthea Cottee playing cello, viola da gamba and lirone and Simon Martyn-Ellis playing theorbo and baroque guitar
A Delicate Fire premieres on October 29 and is available for unlimited streaming for $30 until 13 December 2020. Viewing is in Australia only.
