R Strauss’ ‘Salome’ on SBS TV
The long weekend has a treasure in store with the screening on SBS TV of Sir David McVicar’s production of Richard Strauss’ sinister masterpiece Salome.
Based on the play by Oscar Wilde, which in turn is derived from the Biblical tale, the one-act opera has some famous moments in opera, amongst them the Dance of the Seven Veils and Salome’s engagement with the severed head of Jokanaan (John the Baptist).
From the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Nadja Michael sings the role of Salome, conducted by Philippe Jordan and sung in German.
