Ray Chen On Tour
Violinist Ray Chen performs in Sydney with pianist Timothy Young for Musica Viva as part of his first national recital tour of Australia.
Born in Taiwan, the 25-year-old wunderkind grew up in Brisbane and was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia aged just 15. In 2008 he won the Yehudi Menuhin Competition and in 2009, Belgium’s renowned Queen Elisabeth Prize.
Ray Chen now records for Sony and has released two highly acclaimed albums: a recital program, Virtuoso of works by Bach, Tartini, Franck, and Wieniawski, and the Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky concertos with the Swedish Radio Orchestra and Daniel Harding. Virtuoso was awarded the prestigious ECHO Klassik award. His third recording, an all-Mozart album with Christoph Eschenbach and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, was released in January 2014.
Ray Chen has a social media following that would be the envy of a rock star – numbering over 1.5 million people on SoundCloud. He brings classical music to a younger generation and is supported by Giorgio Armani in his efforts to break down the barriers between classical music, fashion and pop culture.
He plays the 1715 “Joachim” Stradivarius violin on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation.
