Selby and Friends End 10th Anniversary Season with Sheer Nylon Tour

Pianist Kathryn Selby celebrated the tenth anniversary of her chamber ensemble Selby & Friends in 2016 with four vivacious, acclaimed national tours through the year.

In November, Selby & Friends will embark upon their fifth and final tour for the year, entitled Sheer Nylon. 

The Sheer Nylon performances will feature much loved piano trios from around the world, blending classical with contemporary, highlighting Australian composer Gerard Brophy from whose work this tour takes its name, alongside Schubert, Liszt and Brahms.

For this tour, Kathy Selby has invited guests cellist Julian Smiles, in his second Selby & Friends tour for 2016, having performed during this year’s Basically Beethoven tour and Australian-Swiss violinist and Artistic Director of the Festival Strings Lucerne, Daniel Dodds. The trio will be reuniting for the first time in more than two years. Their last Selby & Friends collaboration was in July 2014, when they played  a “consistently enthralling” performance of music by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Fauré.

Australian born violinist Daniel Dodds travelled to Europe as a 17-year-old to study, and is now an award-winning chamber musician and soloist and Artistic Director of the Festival Strings Lucerne.

Julian Smiles has enjoyed a busy career as an orchestral and chamber musician and soloist in Australia and abroad. Formerly principal cellist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and guest principal with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Julian is a co-founder of the internationally renowned Goldner String Quartet, and currently performs with the  Australia Ensemble home.

Kathryn Selby AM, Australia’s pre-eminent chamber music pianist, has a string of international and Australian performance awards appraising her ‘formidable talent’. As the Artistic Director of Selby & Friends she has established an ensemble that has flourished over the past decade collaborating with many musicians and performing music from the classics of the chamber repertoire to new works.
