Selby & Friends Launch 2017 With Youth & The Dance
Selby & Friends launch their 2017 season with a national tour of Youth & the Dance. Rising star, Australian violinist Grace Clifford joins American cellist Clancy Newman and Artistic Director and pianist Kathryn Selby, AM for this tour which highlights the diversity of the piano trio.
On the programme are Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E-flat major Op. 1 No. 1, Camille Saint-Saëns’ Piano Trio No. 1 in F major, Op. 18 and Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Trio in E minor, Op. 90 ‘Dumky’, spanning early Beethoven and Saint-Saëns to the popular folk-inspired “Dumky” Trio by Dvořák.
As always, Artistic Director Kathryn Selby has invited two internationally acclaimed guest artists to perform with her in this tour. Grace Clifford makes a welcome return to Selby & Friends after debuting with Selby & Friends’ ‘Development Artist’ program in 2014. She competed as a 13-year-old in a select group of participants in the 2012 Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition and went on in 2014 to win the ABC Symphony Australia ‘Young Performer of the Year’ Award. Now studying under the Young Artists Initiative Program at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Grace has a promising international career.
Clancy Newman has established himself as one of the USA’s top young chamber musicians. Newman is a winner of two of America’s most prestigious awards, the Walter W. Naumburg International Competition and the Avery Fisher Career grant. As a former member of the Chamber Music Society Two of the Lincoln Center, he has previously toured with Rudolf Serkin’s ensemble, Musicians from Marlboro. Now a member of the Chicago Chamber Musicians, Newman also currently performs at festivals and universities throughout the USA. He is a talented composer in his own right with multiple commissions under his belt, and has composed for Selby & Friends. In addition to his credentials in the classical music world, Newman has a popular YouTube channel with intricate solo cello covers of iconic Pop hits.
Kathryn Selby AM, pre-eminent Australian pianist and entrepreneur, boasts a string of international and Australian performance awards. In 2016 she also celebrated the 10th anniversary of her ensemble Selby & Friends, whose playing was dubbed by the Sydney Morning Herald as “chamber music at its best”. A hallmark of the series is the relaxed and intimate performance format which sees the musicians speaking with the audience from the stage about their personal experiences in music.
