Vocal chamber music ensemble Halcyon celebrates 15 years at the vanguard of wonderful music making with two landmark events.

They invite you to an evening of music at the new Sculpture Terrace of the Museum of Contemporary Art. Here, they will perform a selection of music from their project Kingfisher – Songs for Halcyon, which commemorates this anniversary and for which they have commissioned songs by 23 of Australia’s most recognised and admired composers. This project they say, will contribute significantly to the repertoire for singer and small ensemble, building the canon of Australian vocal chamber music as well as creating an important legacy.

Kingfisher – Songs for Halcyon features songs by composers Katy Abbott, Stephen Adams, Gerard Brophy, Nigel Butterley, Sharon Calcraft, Ross Edwards, Andrew Ford, Stuart Greenbaum, Elliott Gyger, Graham Hair, Moya Henderson, Gordon Kerry, Raffaele Marcellino, Kevin March, Ruth Lee Martin, Rosalind Page, John Peterson, Andrew Schultz, Paul Stanhope, Jane Stanley, Nicholas Vines, Dan Walker and Gillian Whitehead.

The composers of these newly crafted songs will be present at the function and the artists for the evening are soprano Alison Morgan, mezzo-soprano Jenny Duck-Chong, Laura Chislett Jones (flutes), Diana Springford (clarinets), Geoffrey Gartner (cello) and Joshua Hill (percussion).

It is a taste of things to come as Halcyon will perform the entire song collection over two concerts in March 2014 and produce a commercial CD.

The location for this event is well matched to Halcyon’s niche of performing and creating new music. The exclusive cocktail event overlooking spectacular Sydney Harbour will be compered by harpist and friend of the ensemble Genevieve Lang Huppert.

Funds raised from the occasion will support Kingfisher – Songs for Halcyon. This substantial collection of songs represents the cream of vocal composition in Australia today.
