Classical guitarist Marco Tamayo is soon to give his first public performance in Sydney. Dubbed by the Italian newspaper La Stampa  ‘Il Re della Chitarra’ (The king of the guitar), he joined the University of Sydney Conservatorium of Music in August last year as an associate lecturer in guitar.

The programme will include Fernando Sor’s Gran Solo works by Joaquín Turina and Francisco Tarrega as well as a number of Marco’s own transcriptions and editions, specifically works by Morricone (Cinema Paradiso) and Mascagni ( the Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana).  

The Cuban -born musician who has played the guitar since the age of 3, was 6 when he made his first public appearance on national television in Cuba. His official debut took place at the Chopin-Pleyel hall in Paris in 1999. Before coming to Australia, Marco Tamayo was living in Salzburg where he taught at his former university, The Mozarteum. He was appointed to the position of professor in 2000. In between teaching, Marco Tamayo maintains a busy schedule of international concerts and masterclasses. He has made three recordings on the Naxos label.
