Selby & Friends 2013 Tour Two – ‘First, Last And Only’

When:  On 11-Apr-13, at 7:00pm
Where:  City Recital Hall, Angel Place

Australian violinist Susie Park returns home to join two fine Australian musicians, ACO Principal Cellist Timo-Veikko Valve and Artistic Director /pianist Kathryn Selby AM in a brilliant foray through three beloved piano trios.

The program for the second tour in the season, titled First, Last and Only, moves from Shostakovich’s Russian fearlessness to Ravel’s French eloquence and ending with the Viennese charm and finesse of Schubert.

“This program presents, with oodles of charm and melod,y the first piano trio composed by a young Shostakovich, the last by a young and very ill Schubert, and the only masterpiece for piano trio by Maurice Ravel. It will be truly exciting to work with such brilliant musicians for the first time” says Selby.

A former member of the Eroica Trio of the USA, Susie Park recognised for her emotive range and dynamic stage presence. Park presently lives in the US and has performed around the world, appearing as soloist with the Vienna Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Memphis Symphony, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and major Australian and New Zealand orchestras.

Parks relishes her trips home whenever she gets the chance: “I’m really looking forward to this tour and exploring this great program with Kathy and Tipi. I’m also really excited to travel and play for Australian audiences who obviously enjoy chamber music!”

Timo-Veikko “Tipi” Valve is currently Principal Cellist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, a position he has held since 2006. He is renowned for his versatility and regularly performs as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra leader with both modern and period instruments in Europe, Asia, Australia and the US. Valve studied at the Sibelius Academy in his hometown of Helsinki and at the Edsberg Music Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, focusing on solo performance and chamber music in both institutions.

Featuring in tours two and three this season, Valve is looking forward to the chance to work closely with Kathryn Selby, and in this tour cover new musical territory. “In this tour repertoire there are a few personal favourites of mine, mixed with some new acquaintances. I’m really hesitant to admit not having played the Ravel trio before…I guess there has to be a first time for everything.”

Founder, Artistic Director, and pianist Kathryn Selby AM, has a formidable reputation as one of Australia’s pre-eminent chamber music pianists. In January 2013 Selby was appointed to the Order of Australia as a Member of the Order (AM) for her significant service to the arts as a concert pianist and performer of chamber music.

She began her piano studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and then attended the famed Curtis Institute of Music and Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia, and earned her Master’s degree from New York’s Juilliard School. Kathy has widely toured internationally including performances with the American Chamber Orchestra and was a founding member of the Philadelphia Orchestra Chamber Group. She has recorded extensively throughout her career and is the recipient of both the prestigious Churchill and Australia Council Fellowships.
