Songs Of The Cinema
Soprano Nadia Piave and pianist Mauro Colombis have put together Cinema! a programme of songs by Nino Rota, Georges Delerue and Charles Chaplin from Italian and French movies from the 1950’s through to the 1980’s – the gorgeous themes of Fellini’s La Strada and Tornatore’s Cinema Paradiso, and those haunting songs from Colpi’s Une Aussi Longue Absence, Truffaut’s L’Amour a Vignt Ans and Sautet’s Les Choses de La Vie… this concert takes you to the studios of Cinecitta in Rome and Pathe in Paris…
…..and the Chaplin connection? well Charles Chaplin lived in Switzerland, where they speak French and Italian, and he made a film called “The Immigrant” (lots of Italians there, from the south of Italy, and from the Veneto, where they speak a dialect…which could almost be French!!!) AND 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the creation of Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Tramp’ character – just so happens Mauro is one of Australia’s leading accompanists for silent film, so who knows what else Nadia and Mauro might have for you under our bowler hats…

Italo-Australian Nadia Piave is an independant performer and runs a private teaching studio; she also teaches at the Sydney Conservatorium Open Academy and performs with the Nadia Piave Trio for Musica Viva. In 2008 she was named the National Italian-Australian Woman of the Year for her dedication and contribution to the dissemination of Italian song throughout Australia.
Italian-born Mauro Colombis is a recital accompanist, and is in wide demand as a pianist for silent films in Australia and abroad.
This concert is part of the inaugural Festival of Double Belonging, a festival where performers celebrate their dual cultural backgrounds.
