Steve Newcomb With The Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra
The Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra presents the international debut of new work for jazz saxophone and jazz orchestra by Steve Newcomb featuring Conservatorium staff member David Theak.
Steve Newcomb is an Australian pianist, composer, arranger who in 2013 completed doctoral study at the Manhattan School of Music in composition, with Jim McNeely of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He is in demand for commission work as a composer, and has written for a wide array of musical artists, from Ben Folds, Ben Lee and The Panics in the pop world, to the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras in the classical world.
He has collaborated with Australian vocalist Katie Noonan on many projects, including… the ARIA award winning album “First Seed Ripening”, and the song cycle plus Circus project titled LOVE SONG CIRCUS, which premiered at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2012. His work in the field of jazz has seen him write for Stefon Harris and the Manhattan School of Music Symphony, and the world renowned Metropole Orkest (The Netherlands) and vocalist Roberta Gambarini.
In 2012 he and Australian author Benjamin Law created a work based around text, which was commissioned by the Southern Cross Soloists. Mr. Newcomb has shared the stage with a number of fine musicians in Australia and the USA, including Clocked Out duo, Katie Noonan, Emma Pask, James Morrison,Chris McNulty, Jamie Oehlers, Steve Magnusson and Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, among others.
Steve has performed at Carnegie Hall, Cornelia Street Cafe (New York), A-Train (Berlin), Porgy and Bess (Austria), Gambrinus (Switzerland), Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Sydney Opera House, The Ellington Jazz Club, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Tanks Arts Centre, Bennetts Lane and Jazzworx (Australia). Steve Newcomb has taught in clinics and workshops around the world, and holds a teaching position at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane, Australia. He enjoys being active in community music programs where he has had the opportunity to mentor a number of up and coming musicians.
