Streeton Trio’s Golden Summer
The Streeton Trio
One of Australia’s premier chamber ensembles, the Streeton Trio, presents a delightful afternoon’s entertainment as part of the popular Prelude in Tea series at North Sydney’s Independent Theatre.
From Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E flat to Brahms’ broad Trio in B major this program explores the many moods of summer. Book-ending the hearty classics are Kats-Chernin’s Butterflying, Sculthorpe’s evocative Night Song and Piazzola’s Buenos Aires Summer.
The afternoon’s entertainment includes the theatre’s famously scrumptious afternoon tea,
The trio’s namesake, Arthur Streeton’s ‘Golden Summer, Eaglemont’ has become one of the defining images of Australian art. The “Streetons” explore the many facets of summer in this evocative program. Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E flat is one of his most optimistic chamber works, while the Brahms opus 8 trio, written early in his life and later extensively revised, is hugely popular for its broad lyricism and sweeping romantic gestures. Elena Kats-Chernin’s Butterflying, originally for children’s choir, is heard here in a delightful trio arrangement. Sculthorpe’s Night Song, in his own words, “is concerned with solitary thoughts at night, while becalmed on a distant sea”. And finally, Astor Piazzolla’s Four Seasons, are an homage to Buenos Aires, Piazzola’s hometown, and the city that gave tango to the world. Summer (Verana Porteno) depicts the hot, lazy summer days Piazzolla spent in Buenos Aires and is infused with the melodic yearning and rhythmic vitality of the tango.
Named after the Australian Impressionist painter, Sir Arthur Streeton, the internationally successful Streeton Trio (currently Emma Jardine, Benjamin Kopp & Julian Smiles) was formed in 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland. In 2010, they were selected for residency in the prestigious European Chamber Music Academy. Since returning to Sydney, the trio has won the Music Viva Chamber Music Competition, featured as Musica Viva’s “Rising Stars” ensemble and been laureate of several major international competitions. The Streeton Trio has released four celebrated CDs, which are frequently featured on Australian radio and the trio has received great acclaim for performances all over the world including the UK, China, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Holland, Lithuania, Norway, Germany, France, Austria and Switzerland.
