‘Suor Angelica’ – Harbour City Opera
Punching above its weight in talent and ambition, Sydney’s new kid on the block, Harbour City Opera presents Puccini’s 1 – act opera Suor Angelica, the tale of a young woman forced by her family to retreat to a nunnery as a result of an indiscretion. For seven years she waits for news of her family and the child she bore.
Puccini drew inspiration from his sister Igenia, Mother Superior at a nearby convent, and played his music to the nuns, who were apparently moved to tears by it.. The work was completed in July 1917 and premiered along with its two companion-pieces, Il tabarro and Gianni Schicchi, at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1918.
Directed by Andy Morton and Music Direction by Sharolyn Kimmorley, Sarah Ann Walker sings the role of Suor Angelica with Sarah Court as La zia Principessa, Adele Johnston as The Abbess and Sarah Sweeting, Eleanor Greenwood, Eva Kong, Jennifer Bonner, Alice Girle, Kyla Allan, Alexandra Dalman, Joelene Griffith, Kirsten Jones, Zoe Drummond, Catherine Borchok and Georgia Kokkoris.
