Sydney Antiphony Presents MYSTERIUM
Sydney Antiphony, one of Sydney’s finest vocal ensembles presents MYSTERIUM, an introspective look at Christmas music spanning five centuries, in which rarely heard gems of Renaissance polyphony are paired with twentieth century masterpieces.
Poulenc’s Four Motets for Christmas (Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël) stands at the core of MYSTERIUM which includes works by the Renaissance masters Palestrina, Victoria and Lassus. The concert will also feature the lesser-known yet stunning polyphony of Clemens Non Papa, Mouton and Regnart.
This ancient music is paired with works by Mendelssohn, Poulenc, Howells and Leighton, as well as a selection of traditional carols. In keeping with the mission of Sydney Antiphony to perform new Australian works, MYSTERIUM will also feature music by Sydney Antiphony’s own tenor, Owen Elsley.
The venue, St Canice’s Church in Elizabeth Bay has a stunning acoustic right in the heart of King’s Cross.
All profits will go to the St Canice’s Soup Kitchen, which provides lunch every day of the year to those most in need.
Sydney Antiphony is a new vocal ensemble that is equally comfortable with ancient music as it is with new compositions. Comprising Sydney’s finest ensemble singers, the ensemble works without a conductor, rehearsing and performing as chamber musicians, and bringing to life great vocal works with only one or two voices to a part. Previous projects have included work with ALASKA projects, Fine Music FM, Performance Space at Carriageworks, and Sydney Chamber Opera.
