Sydney Chamber Choir And orchestra seventeen88 Join Forces For Nelson Mass
The Sydney Chamber Choir joins forces with orchestra seventeen88, conducted by Richard Gill in their final performance for 2016, performing Joseph Haydn’s Nelson Mass.
Joseph Haydn wrote his ‘Nelson’ Mass for a world in turmoil: Napoleon’s armies were sweeping across Europe and had nearly reached the gates of Vienna. Haydn’s response was to write music of serenity and confidence, transforming the trumpets of war into fanfares of joy.
In this performance, Sydney Chamber Choir is joined by orchestra seventeen88, playing on instruments from Haydn’s time and bringing the music alive as Haydn himself might have heard it.
Sharing the program with Haydn is Australian composer Ross Edwards, whose Missa Alchera reveals deep connections between time, ritual, place and the Dreaming of Australia’s Indigenous peoples.
