Sydney Chamber Choir – Life Begins at 40 With 2015 Season
The Sydney Chamber Choir celebrates 40 years of music making with the launch of its 2015 programme.
Musical Director Paul Stanhope observes “Despite the number of candles on our cake, we are every bit as adventurous as when we were young upstarts!” adding “The choir continues to renew itself through a strong intake of fresh talent, inventive programming and a thirst for the new and unusual as well as music that is established and lauded.”
The year’s subscription package comprises three concerts in March, June and September, all on a Sunday afternoon at 3 pm, performed in the Great Hall at the University of Sydney.
The March concert entitled Passion + Resurrection has an Easter theme. The ensemble will perform the Australian premiere of Passion and Resurrection, a work for soprano, choir and chamber orchestra by leading young Latvian composer, Eriks Ešenvalds. Resident solo soprano Belinda Montgomery and Sydney Camerata Chamber Orchestra feature in this programme. As well, there are works by the ancient masters Gesualdo and Lassus, and contemporary composers MacMillan and Broadstock.
In June, Nicholas Routley conducts the ensemble in Creativity + Loss, performing the two piano version of Brahms’ Requiem, Ligeti’s Lux Aeterna, which features on the soundtrack of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and music by Dufay, Ockeghem, Des Prez and the world premiere of a new work by Clare Maclean.
In September, Richard Gill OAM, conducts the intriguingly titled Six Times Three features “Three exquisite part-songs by Debussy and three by Ravel; three heavenly motets and three utterly earthly madrigals; and six modern Australian composers: three women, and three men.” They include Dan Walker, Elliot Gyger and Vincent Plush; Elena Kats-Chernin, Dulcie Holland and Gillian Whitehead.
