Sydney Conservatorium Of Music Launches Music Theatre Program For 2022

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music has launched a brand new Music Theatre program commencing in 2022.

This new triple threat (singing, acting and dancing) program is designed by Dr Narelle Yeo (director), with Olivia Ansell (dance), Peter Cousens (performance), Felicity Jurd (acting), Simon Kenway (musical direction) has advisory panels and teaching faculty drawn from world-class industry professionals. The Conservatorium’s world-class vocal program is expanding from classical, contemporary and jazz to service the music theatre community and build musicians creating authentic characterisations with powerful and nuanced voices.

Taught by industry leaders, the music theatre program will teach the physiological and theoretical underpinnings of music theatre voice projection. Music theatre students will explore repertoire tailored to their individual needs with an emphasis on the development of technical skills in voice, movement, acting and dance, musical and dramatic expression and English diction.

Students will gain experience in performance and presentation through ensemble workshops, learning and reflecting on their own and peers’ work. Graduates will be able to demonstrate musical, dramatic, dance and technical skills that prepare them for engagement as music theatre performers, developing a healthy and versatile vocal technique in all registers, using projection, diction, individuality and authenticity in performance onstage.

  • The prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music has world-class concert halls and facilities, including more than 100 practice rooms, diverse performing spaces and extensive library resources.
  • Students will perform in one original Australian work every two years, a cabaret every year, a black box every year and a fully staged production later in their degree.
  • Students will have access to a wide range of subject areas from across the University of Sydney, with electives including languages and performance studies.
  • The campus is in the heart of the Sydney CBD, minutes away from some of Australia’s premier performing arts venues.
