The Sydney Schubert Society presents its first concert for 2014.

Entitled Schubert’s Kapellmeister, the Sydney Schubert Ensemble directed by Goetz Richter will perform the Septet Eflat major op 62 by Conradin Kreutzer and the Octet in F major D 803  by Franz Schubert.

The Octet in F major written in 1824 is considered to be one of Schubert’s greatest works. The companion piece in the programme was written Schubert’s contemporary Conradin Kreutzer. Kreutzer was born in the small town of Messkirch in Germany in 1780 (incidentally also the birthplace of the 20th century philosopher Martin Heidegger some 109 years later). For some time he was Kapellmeister at the Kärtnertortheater in Vienna where he championed some of Schubert’s 0peras.Kreutzer was clearly acquainted with Schubert’s music and cognisant of his genius. A fine, early romantic composer influenced by Carl Maria von Weber, Kreutzer worked as music director, pianist and composer and died in Riga in 1849.
