Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows Commemorate Armistice Day
The 2018 Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows will commemorate the centenary of the Armistice that ended the First World War together with members of the Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra.
The program entitled At the Eleventh Hour, features music by composers from Britain, France, Germany and Russia who served in World War I. The concert will also include Edgar Bainton’s Three Pieces for Orchestra, written during his internment at a prison camp in Ruhleben, Germany. Following the end of the First World War, Bainton went on to become the third Director of the Sydney Conservatorium and launched the Conservatorium Opera School.
Artistic Director of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowship, Roger Benedict, highlighted the significance of featuring the particular list of composers as part of the program. “At the Eleventh Hour includes composers who served on both fronts – some who also tragically lost their lives during the war,” said Benedict.
The concert will feature works by Edgar Bainton, George Butterworth, Edward Elgar, Nikolai Myaskovsky, Maurice Ravel and Rudi Stephan.
