‘The Bernstein Letters’ – Fresh Insights In A New Book
The Bernstein Letters, (Yale University Press, 2013) is a selected collection of the letters of Leonard Bernstein, many of them previously unpublished.
Curated by British scholar and writer Nigel Simeone, the book offers new insights into the charismatic conductor and composer through both to as well as from his glittering circle of friends, amongst them, Aaron Copland,Stephen Sondheim, Boris Pasternak, Bette Davis, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and family, including his wife Felicia Montealegre.
The letters cover Bernstein’s musings on music, as well as accounts of his travels. Letters from Felicia shortly after their marriage reveal a compassionate acceptance of Bernstein’s sexuality.
