The Mandolin In Concert: Avital With The Brandenburgs

Grammy nominated mandolin player and Deutsche Grammophon recording artist Avi Avital performs with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra under the artistic direction of Paul Dyer AO, in Sydney in May.

Rarely heard as a solo instrument in Sydney,  Avital and the ABO perform music from opposite ends of the stylistic spectrum from the formality of the baroque to uninhibited folk music. Avital has forged new ground for his instrument and opened the world’s ears to its potential. “The mandolin is full of depth and full of possibilities,” says Avital. “My dream is to bring the mandolin and its repertory to the widest possible audience.”

Avital’s concert programme will include works that feature on his debut album Bach, and his new album Between Worlds.

“Bach’s music captured me from a very early age,” says Avital who started playing the mandolin when he was 8. “Bach’s music is full of secrets. No matter how long you’ve been playing it, there is still something to discover every time. Using a different instrument allows you to hear its timelessness in a new way.”

From Between Worlds, Avital and the Brandenburg will perform an arrangement of Romanian Folk Dances by Béla Bartók, who along with Manuel De Falla, debuts on the Brandenburg stage in this series.
