The Metropolitan Orchestra Highlights The Trumpet
The Metropolitan Orchestra will feature one of Australia’s shining stars of the trumpet in their second Met Concert for this year titled Passion in which trumpeter Jenna Smith will perform Arutunian’s flamboyant Trumpet Concerto in a programme which includes Rossini’s William Tell Overture, Ligeti’s Concert Românesc and Carmen Suites One and Two by Bizet.
Popularly known as the theme music from The Lone Ranger, the William Tell Overture opens this Met Concert performance. Composed for Rossini’s final opera, this well-known work paints a musical picture of life in the Swiss Alps invoking images of the sunrise, rain and swirling winds to end with the famous galloping theme. Gyorgy Ligeti applied a modern take to Romanian folk music with his Concert Românesc which was banned from performance soon after it was written, waiting some 20 years before being performed again in 1971.
Principal trumpet with TMO since 2012, Jenna Smith is already immersed in a stellar musical career as trumpet fellow in Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s Fellowship program for the second year. Jenna also performs with the Australian Youth Orchestra and Sydney Youth Orchestra in addition to regular engagements with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. Having won numerous awards, she has also been selected to perform with the Australian World Orchestra later this year as part of the AWO Academy.
Carmen has become one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the classical canon. The orchestral suites from Carmen consist of a range of instrumental excerpts from the opera, and also a selection of arias and other vocal selections transcribed for the orchestra. These suites are the perfect way for a full symphony orchestra to perform Bizet’s masterpiece and allow the musicians and audience to fully indulge in the incredible music that is usually reserved for the operatic stage.
