The Song Company – Strange Fruit
The Song Company will be celebrating a historic moment when they perform their concert Strange Fruit in Sydney in October.
The song heads up a programme of blues, jazz and gospel music in which The Song Company sings of the pain of alienation and reaches beyond the heartbreaking imagery of Strange Fruit to touch reconciliation and healing.
The song Strange Fruit was first sung and recorded by Billie Holiday in 1939. It was written by a white Jewish American writer, teacher and songwriter Abel Meeropol, under his pseudonym Lewis Allan, as a protest against the horrific racial violence prevalent at the time.
