Two Cellos At Lunchtime
Cellists Mathisha Panagoda and Ella Jamieson present a lunchtime concert of music that spans several centuries form Bach to Glass.
The two musicians are founding members of the Sydney Camerata. They have been collaborating since they first met in 1998 as choristers in Gondwana Voices, Australia’s national children’s choir.
The Sydney Camerata was formed in 2008 and has since performed throughout Sydney at venues including the City Recital Hall, Sydney Conservatorium, Seymour Centre, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and the Independent Theatre. In 2010 the Sydney Camerata won the 2010 Sydney Eisteddfod Musica Viva Award for Chamber Music and were nominated Musica Viva’s 2012 ‘Rising Stars’. In 2013 the Sydney Camerata Quartet performed on ABC Sunday Live with Nicholas Russoniello and the Sydney Camerata Chamber Orchestra collaborated with the Sydney Chamber Choir to perform MacMillan’s Seven Last Words at Sydney University’s Great Hall. The ensemble is highly versatile and aims to provide important performance opportunities for aspiring young professional musicians. It supports young composers through its annual composition fellowship program and endeavours to bring classical music to new audiences.

Mathisha was born in Sydney and began playing the cello at the age of four. He completed his tertiary studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music graduating with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) and a Juris Doctor in law from the University of Sydney. With the assistance of a BBM Award and Ars Musica Australis Fellowship he pursued further musical studies in the UK, Germany and Canada. In Australia he has performed with the Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland Symphony Orchestras and toured with numerous bands including the Hilltop Hoods, Tina Arena, Marcia Hines and Angus & Julia Stone. Mathisha has toured internationally with the Aldeburgh World Orchestra, Britten-Pears Orchestra, YouTube Symphony Orchestra and Australian Youth Orchestra. He has performed at a number of festivals throughout Asia, Europe and North America and has undertaken two solo residencies at The Banff Centre in Canada.
Ella graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium with a Bachelor in Music in Performance. Whilst primarily a classical musician, she has many more strings to her bow performing regularly internationally in other genres including pop, jazz and original songs as both a cellist and pianist. Ella grew up in Bathurst where she attained her AMUS in piano and cello and Trinity Performance Certificate on trumpet. She has performed with orchestra both the Mozart and Shostakovich piano concertos and Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. Ella has performed as a guest with the Ho Chi Minh Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Conservatorium Early Music Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra, Salt String Quartet and with singer/songwriter Abby Smith. One of her main ensembles, Aston, has an international following on YouTube with over 7 million views and is now touring worldwide. Her TV experience has become extensive not only with Aston, but as the house band on Channel 7’s ‘The Matty Johns Show’ and most recently on Australia’s ‘The Voice’ and ‘X Factor’.
