Utzon Room Announces 2020 Season
The flagship chamber music series at the Sydney Opera House, Utzon Music will return in 2020 for its 13th year. From March to December, the 2020 program will continue to present some of the world’s most celebrated classical musicians while embracing new performers, influences and genres including folk, jazz and world music,
In March, Welsh harpist Catrin Finch and Senegalese kora maestro Seckou Keita present an exotic pairing of the kora, an ancient traditional African harp, with the classical western harp in a new Friday evening time slot. Later in March, the pianist Andrea Lam will make her Utzon Music debut. Full of passion, charm and the legacy of an ABC Young Performers Award under her belt, this performance will be a special homecoming for the New York-based artist.
In April, Artistic Director of Pinchgut Opera, Erin Helyard, recently hailed at the International Opera Awards, will join the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s 17-piece string ensemble, ACO Collective, which combines Australia’s most talented emerging string players with the professional musicians of the ACO.
In May, French ensemble the Van Kuijk Quartet performs, followed in June by Narek Hakhnazaryan, Cello First Prize and Gold Medal winner, at the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition, then aged 22. The Armenian cellist is on the rise, performing as soloist with numerous major European and American orchestras
Maarja Nuut, Estonia singer and violinist, performs in August, exploring where classical music and traditional Estonian song meet. In September, three accomplished performers who together make up 3MA: Ballaké Sissoko, Driss El Maloumi and Rajery create stories in a musical tapestry of three African cultures from Morocco, Mali and Madagascar.
Helena Rathbone and Friends perform in late September, when the ACO Principal Violinist collaborates with her colleagues Timo-Veikko Valve (ACO Principal Cello), Christopher Moore (previously ACO Principal Viola, now Principal with MSO) and Scottish pianist Alasdair Beatson.
In November, the Debussy String Quartet, established nearly 30 years ago, returns performing an arrangement of Mozart’s Requiem. Finally, in December, violinist James Ehnes with pianist Andrew Armstrong, commemorate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, performing the complete collection of violin sonatas over three recitals in one weekend.
