Vale Ravi Shankar

Ravi Shankar, the man who introduced Indian classical music and its instruments to the western world, died earlier this week in the US. He formed never before contemplated collaborations with musicians from The Beatles to Yehudi Menuhin, Andre Previn to Philip Glass, John Coltrane and Jean-Pierre Rampal.

The three times Grammy award winner is the father of Norah Jones and Anooshka Shankar, celebrated musicians in their own right. Shankar in fact started his artistic life as a dancer with the troupe of his brother, Uday Shankar, who introduced Indian classical dancing to the western world. Ravi Shankar decided to study the sitar when he was 18, taking to composition for stage and film as well as performance.
