West Head Project: Recursive Space
Driven by the philosophy of performing music in the outdoors and inspired by the outdoors, the West Head Project comprising saxophonists Rosalind Hall and Jim Denley present Recursive Space a meeting of two instrumental and musical innovators – players from different generations who redefine their instruments. Their aim in these concerts is to go beyond instrumental and musical redefinition and find music that resonates with two redefined spaces – to effect a rethink of spaces through music and visa versa.
The West Head Project creates site specific sound events and recordings at outdoor locations. Initially these were held at West Head in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Sydney. They have gone on to play in special sites around Australia. “We strongly believe that creating a culture of playing outside in Australia is the most appropriate context to find a new music in these lands” says Jim Denley.
Their Sydney performance will be at the Paddington Reservoir, where in 2006, architects Tonkin, Zulaikha and Greer and landscape architects JMD Design began work to conserve, restore and reuse the space of the then derelict Paddington Reservoir. The facility reopened in 2008 as a sunken garden with rooftop reserve above the preserved eastern chamber. The facility integrates the remains of the original brick, timber and iron structure with modern elements of sculptural, structural and functional significance which provide access to the sunken garden via stairs and an elevator.
