Worlds Apart
Acacia Quartet and multi-ARIA-award-winning pianist/composer Sally Whitwell collaborate to present an exciting mix of romantic and contemporary compositions: a seldom heard piano quintet by American Amy Beach, Johannes Brahms’ String Quartet no 2 and two pieces composed by Whitwell herself.
This program begins with Winter Love, a romantic dedication to Sally’s partner, and Downsized, a concerto for toy instruments arranged for quintet.
Amy Beach was a child prodigy on the piano, and performed as a soloist with the Boston Symphony whilst still in her teens. She is now regarded as America’s first successful female composer. Her Piano Quintet Op.67 in f# minor is full of lush harmonies in the romantic style of Brahms and Rachmaninov.
To round off this exciting program: Brahms’ String Quartet no 2. Brahms, ever a perfectionist, is rumoured to have destroyed 20 string quartets before allowing his first quartets to be published.
