Youth and Love
The Dunstone and Hand Duo’s second concert for 2012, Youth and Love, will feature Debussy’s Trois Chansons de Bilitis and Schumann’s Sieben Lieder von Elisabeth Kulmann. Mezzo-soprano Prudence Dunstone and pianist Maryleigh hand will also perform some Italian songs and some charming songs by Sibelius. The Sydney based duo has been performing together for over 10 years.
Prudence Dunstone describes the programme: “Debussy’s Trois Chansons de Bilitis are settings of poems by his friend Pierre Louÿs (1870-1925). The songs follow the progression of a relationship from its most romantic beginnings through to a comfortable companionship. They are wonderfully evocative – listen for the frogs as night falls, and little flurries of snow depicted in the piano!
Elisabeth Kulmann (1808-1825) was a Russian poet who died tragically young. She was a prodigy, writing more than one thousand poems in several different languages. Schumann was a great admirer of her work. The songs speak of the great beauty she found in life despite her poverty, the dreadful loss of her father and brothers, her own imminent death, and of her love for her mother”.
Tickets: $20/$10.
