‘Rhapsodies to Rhumbas’ – the Music of Margaret Brandman

DDRR

Duo Deconet presents  Rhapsodies to Rhumbas which features the music of Australian composer Margaret Brandman. The concert showcases Brandman’s diverse range of writing style from art music and sensuous art songs, to Latin and Jazz inspired works scored for a variety of instrumental ensembles.

Violinist Henry Avila and pianist Irma Enriquez formed Duo Deconet in 2008 and champion the creation and performance of 21st century Latin American chamber music in Australia. Their aim is to promote the music of a new generation of established living Latin American composers, regularly offering premieres in the Asia-Pacific region.

Other artists performing include Margaret Brandman herself at the piano, dramatic mezzo-soprano Desiree Regina, Jazz vocalist Yyani Rose, and the Brandmanburg Saxophone Quartet and Jazz Ensemble.

Margaret Brandman studied composition with Peter Sculthorpe at the University of Sydney. Born into a musical family she learnt music from an early age beginning with accordion and piano, taking up guitar and clarinet in her teens. Her  education, supported by formal studies in piano, clarinet,  harmony and composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music,  covered many styles of music. Brandman’s compositions have received concert  performances and radio broadcasts in Australia and in Europe..
