The Sydney Symphony Orchestra performs a collection of magical music written for the ballet by Tchaikovsky, Rossini and Ravel. Principal Cellist Umberto Clerici will step into the role of conductor and lead his colleagues in concerts featuring some of the most enduring melodies written for ballet.
Tchaikovsky is particularly celebrated for his ballet music. The suite from one of his most enduring ballets, Swan Lake is passionate story about love and betrayal with sublime music. Tchaikovsky’a music is so grand and transcendent that it is continually performed not only in ballet houses but in concert halls around the world.
Opening the concert is Rossini’s overture to his opera The Thieving Magpie. A signature piece from the master of Italian opera, it’s a work of jubilant themes and musical invention.
In keeping with the magic of the evening, the orchestra will perform Ravel’s Mother Goose suite which takes its inspiration from fairy-tale characters Thumbelina, Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty, painted as if in watercolour by Ravel’s gentle musical palette. The most magical music is saved for last, The Fairy Garden, which blossoms into a radiant and spectacular finale.
