Community Music Australia is calling nationwide for community music groups to complete their survey, launched on 1 November, 2026, to gain an understanding of the depth and breadth of community music making in Australia and the challenges they face.
To date, statistics on this important aspect of musical life are lacking, creating a significant void in dealing with government and funding bodies and the sharing of knowledge and resources. The last such collection of this information dates back to 2012.
For this survey, community music refers to participatory music-making that brings people together primarily for community participation rather than professional employment. Organisations may employ or pay conductors, musical directors, tutors, accompanists, administrators and other professionals and still be considered community music organisations.
The survey is expected to take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete. The findings will inform the first State of Community Music in Australia report, to be released in mid-2027, and will help CMA seeking greater recognition, support and investment in community music.
Community Music Australia is the national voice for community music participation, advocating for, connecting and supporting community music organisations across the country. It is is a registered charity governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and supported by a small professional staff team.
